What is Medicare?

Medicare is a federal health insurance program primarily designed for individuals aged 65 and older, although it also serves certain younger people with disabilities and those with specific medical conditions. Established in 1965, Medicare aims to provide affordable healthcare coverage to mil- lions of Americans, ensuring that they have access to necessary medical services.

Medicare has different parts (referred to as Parts A, B, C and D) designed to address your healthcare needs.

Original Medicare

Medicare Parts A and B are referred to as “Original Medicare” and include a defined set of benefits and services, including preventive services.

Medicare Part A

Part A covers inpatient care provided in hospitals or skilled nursing facilities, home health care services and hospice care for the terminally ill.

Medicare Part B

Part B covers doctor services, outpatient care, medical supplies, durable medical equipment and preventive services.

Other Medicare Coverage Options

Medicare Part C: Medicare Advantage

Medicare Part C, also known as Medicare Advantage, is an alternative to Original Medicare (Parts A and B). These plans are offered by private insurance companies and often include additional benefits, such as vision, dental, and wellness programs. Medicare Advantage plans may also include prescription drug coverage.

Medicare Part D: Prescription Drug Coverage

Medicare Part D provides prescription drug coverage through private insurance plans. Beneficiaries can choose a standalone Part D plan or a Medi- care Advantage plan that includes drug coverage. It is important to enroll in a Part D plan to help manage medication costs.

Eligibility for Medicare

To qualify for Medicare, individuals must meet specific criteria, including age, disability status, and citizenship or residency requirements. Generally, individuals become eligible when they turn 65, but those with certain disabilities may qualify earlier.

How to Enroll in Medicare

Enrollment in Medicare can occur during specific periods, including the Initial Enrollment Period (IEP), which begins three months before the individual turns 65 and lasts for seven months. There are also Annual Enrollment Periods (AEP) and Special Enrollment Periods (SEPs) for those who qualify. IMS has local licensed health plan advisors, that can guide your through the process.

Understanding Medicare Costs

While Medicare provides essential coverage, beneficiaries may still incur costs such as premiums, deductibles, and copayments. It is crucial for individuals to understand these costs and explore options for supplemental insurance, known as Medigap, to help cover out-of-pocket expenses. We encourage you to visit our IMS resource tables at some of our selected clinics to speak to a health advisor.
